Nuvoton Technology Corporation has introduced the NuMicro M3351 series, a family of 32-bit 5V microcontrollers aimed at industrial automation, robotics, human-machine interfaces and embedded control systems that must operate in electrically noisy environments. The devices use an Arm Cortex-M33 core running at up to 144 MHz and support a 2.7V to 5.5V operating range.

The launch is relevant to machine builders because many industrial systems still depend on 5V logic, while new designs increasingly require stronger processing, secure firmware, high-resolution analog measurement and faster communications. The M3351 combines these functions in one MCU family without forcing designers to abandon established 5V architectures.

144 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 Core for Real-Time Control

The NuMicro M3351 series is built around the Arm Cortex-M33 architecture. Nuvoton specifies a maximum operating frequency of 144 MHz together with DSP instructions and a single-precision floating-point unit. These resources target workloads such as motor-control calculations, signal processing, control loops and multi-interface data handling.

Memory configurations range from 256 KB to 1 MB of Flash and up to 128 KB of SRAM. Higher-capacity devices support dual-bank Flash with ECC, background operation and bank swapping. This architecture can simplify firmware-update strategies because one bank can remain available while another is updated.

Selected variants also include up to 64 KB of independent Data Flash. This separate non-volatile area can store calibration constants, operating parameters, alarm histories and equipment settings without repeatedly rewriting the main application image.

High-Resolution Analog Functions for Motion and Process Control

The M3351 family integrates a 12-bit SAR ADC operating at up to 1.7 MSPS and a 14-bit SAR ADC operating at up to 1.0 MSPS. Depending on the device, the 14-bit converter supports as many as 16 input channels.

The MCU also includes a 12-bit DAC, two analog comparators and up to 24 channels of 16-bit PWM and BPWM. Enhanced quadrature encoder interfaces support position and speed feedback from rotating machinery and motion systems.

Hardware trigger paths between PWM, ADC and comparator functions can reduce software latency in time-sensitive applications. This is useful in servo axes, robotic joints, actuator controllers, pumps, fans and compact drive systems where deterministic response matters.

CAN FD, UART, I3C and USB Connectivity

The communication set is broad for a general-purpose industrial MCU. Nuvoton specifies up to two CAN FD interfaces, up to ten UARTs, three I2C interfaces, I3C, QSPI, SPI/I2S, USCI and USB 2.0 Full-Speed host/device support.

For automation hardware, these interfaces allow one controller to connect motor stages, sensors, local displays, service ports and higher-level communication modules. CAN FD is particularly relevant to distributed control and robotics because it increases payload capacity and data rate compared with Classical CAN while retaining the CAN communication model.

Security Features for Connected Industrial Equipment

Industrial controllers are increasingly connected to engineering workstations, gateways and update services. The M3351 includes Arm TrustZone technology and Secure Boot support. Nuvoton also lists cryptographic functions including AES, SHA and hardware random-number generation on supported devices.

These features can help designers separate trusted and non-trusted software regions, validate firmware before execution and protect sensitive data. Their effectiveness still depends on the complete system design, including key management, update policy and network architecture.

Designed for 5V and High-Noise Environments

The M3351 operating voltage range extends from 2.7V to 5.5V, allowing direct use in many existing 5V control designs. This can reduce the number of level-shifting components required when interfacing with legacy sensors, industrial I/O circuitry and peripheral devices.

Nuvoton specifies an operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. The company also lists ESD HBM immunity up to ±4 kV and EFT immunity up to ±4.4 kV. Those specifications are aimed at equipment exposed to switching transients, motor noise and other electrical disturbances common in factory environments.

Packages and Development Support

The M3351 family is offered in QFN33, QFN48, LQFP48, LQFP64, LQFP100 and LQFP128 packages. This gives developers options ranging from compact embedded boards to designs requiring a large number of I/O pins.

Nuvoton provides the NuMaker-M3351 development platform and Nu-Link debugging tools. The series supports common Arm development environments including Keil MDK, IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm and Visual Studio Code workflows.

Where the NuMicro M3351 Fits in Industrial Automation

The combination of 5V operation, Cortex-M33 processing, CAN FD, high-resolution ADCs, encoder interfaces and PWM resources makes the M3351 relevant to several industrial control functions.

  • Robotic joints and compact motion controllers
  • Motor-control and actuator electronics
  • Industrial HMI and operator-interface hardware
  • Distributed sensor and control nodes
  • Power-control and energy-management equipment
  • Embedded gateways and communication modules

Why the M3351 Matters for New Automation Designs

The M3351 is more than a faster replacement for an older 5V MCU. Its value is the combination of modern Arm processing, mixed-signal control, communications and security in a voltage range that remains common across industrial hardware.

For machine builders, that can simplify controller redesigns where the surrounding I/O architecture cannot be replaced at the same time. For new products, the integrated peripherals can reduce external circuitry and board complexity while leaving room for diagnostics, secure updates and more advanced control algorithms.
